Rattling the Cage! Writers Retreat, March 2024

OK, I’m so excited about this!

One of the things I’ve been reflecting on since I’ve started doing a bit of teaching and facilitating writing around the place is the reluctance some people have to say ‘they’re writing.’ It’s like we struggle to even feel like we have the right to put ourselves in that space, to even have the right to say that that’s what we want to do, what we want to spend time on. Especially – it must be said – women.

That’s why I’m so excited to be joining up with journal writing coach Georgina Mavor to run this unique weekend workshop for women writers, with a focus on staking our claim to be explorers of words, ideas and experiences. To boldly, proudly and without apology say, ‘I’m writing!’

And even better, to use the things that can hold us back, to instead fuel and drive even more interesting, compelling and authentic writing – to ‘rattle the cage’, allowing the stories inside us to emerge.

Join us for:

  • A welcoming and empowering environment in which to uncover and develop stories.
  • Opportunities to reflect on our own past experiences, and learn how to catalyse these into compelling and moving writing. Specifically, we will talk about how challenges and flaws can become ‘superpowers’, why we need to embrace conflict and what makes it hard, and what it means to give our characters choices and dilemmas – as writers, and as women.
  • Guided time to reflect on our own individual journeys as writers.
  • Encouragement and exercises to allow us to write with greater freedom and power.
  • Optional one on one writing feedback on a short piece of writing.
  • New friendships, conversations and insights.
